2023 Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Yolanda F. Wiersma
Dr. Wiersma, a Professor at Memorial University of Newfoundland specializing in landscape ecology, has been awarded the 2023 Distinguished Service Award by the North American Regional Chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE-NA) at the annual meeting in Riverside, California, March 19-23rd. The award for Distinguished Service recognizes individuals who have contributed exceptionally to IALE-NA. Exceptional service represents a contribution to IALE-NA in terms of time, energy, and dedication that advances the mission of IALE-NA extraordinarily and thus deserves special recognition.
Dr. Wiersma has a long and remarkable history of service to IALE-NA. Dr. Wiersma was elected councillor-at-large from 2014 to 2016 and served as membership liaison from 2016 to 2018. In addition, Dr. Wiersma has served on the policy committee, the equity, inclusion, and diversity committee, and the communications committee. Over the last several years, Dr. Wiersma has served as the communication committee chair and has exceptionally publicized IALE-NA awardees. Dr. Wiersma consistently acknowledges others’ contributions by submitting award nominations. Dr. Wiersma has also been instrumental in organizing and planning various aspects of IALE-NA conferences, often going above and beyond.
Dr. Yolanda Wiersma received a Ph.D. from the University of Guelph in 2006.
