ANNUAL MEETING|Code of Conduct
Meetings of the International Association for Landscape Ecology—North America (IALE–NA) are open to all IALE–NA members as well as non-members interested in the science and practice of landscape ecology. As a multi-national professional and scientific organization, IALE–NA strives to be inclusive and encourages the participation of contributors from varied and diverse perspectives and backgrounds as we promote landscape ecology. IALE–NA is therefore committed to providing a friendly, safe, productive and welcoming environment for all meeting participants, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ability, race, national origin, or religion.
This Code of Conduct outlines the expectations for all those who participate in IALE–NA meetings, as well as the consequences for unacceptable behavior. All participants including, but not limited to, attendees, speakers, volunteers, exhibitors, IALE–NA members, service providers, and others are expected to abide by this IALE–NA Meetings Code of Conduct. This Code of Conduct applies to all IALE–NA meeting-related events including those sponsored by organizations other than IALE–NA but held in conjunction with IALE–NA events, whether in public or private facilities.
In addition to this Code of Conduct, all meeting participants are asked to adhere to the IALE–NA Guidelines for Social Media/New Media (e.g., Twitter/𝕏, Bluesky, Facebook, blogging).
We invite all those who participate in IALE–NA meetings to help create and maintain a safe and positive community for everyone.

Reporting Unacceptable Behavior

Expected Behavior
- All participants, attendees, IALE–NA members, and vendors are to be treated with respect and consideration, valuing a diversity of views and opinions
- You are expected to communicate openly but with respect for others, critiquing ideas rather than individuals, and to avoid personal attacks directed toward other attendees, participants, IALE–NA members, or suppliers/vendors
- Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants. Alert a IALE–NA Officer or volunteer if you notice a dangerous situation or someone in distress (Report a Violation of the Code of Conduct)
- Remember that IALE–NA event venues may be shared with members of the public; please be respectful of all venue patrons
- Respect the rules and policies of the meeting venue, hotels, contracted facility, or any other venue associated with the IALE–NA meeting
Unacceptable Behavior
Harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form, including but not limited to the following, will not be tolerated:
- Verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, national origin
- Inappropriate use of nudity and/or sexual images in public spaces or in presentations
- Unwelcome sexual attention. This includes, sexualized comments or jokes; inappropriate touching, groping, and unwelcome sexual advances
- Threatening or stalking any attendee, speaker, volunteer, exhibitor, IALE–NA member, service provider, or other meeting guests
- Physical or verbal abuse of any attendee, speaker, volunteer, exhibitor, IALE–NA member, service provider, or other meeting guests
- Violence, threats of violence, or violent language directed against another person
- Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior
- Recording or taking photographs of another individual’s presentation without the explicit permission of the presenter
- Disruption of talks at oral or poster sessions, in the exhibit hall, or at any other events organized by IALE–NA at the meeting venue, hotels, or other facilities contracted by IALE–NA
Consequences
- Anyone requested to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately
- IALE–NA Officers, volunteers (or their designees), or security may take any action deemed necessary and appropriate, including immediate removal from the meeting without warning or refund
- IALE–NA reserves the right to prohibit attendance at any future meeting
Reporting Unacceptable Behavior
- If you are the subject of unacceptable behavior or have witnessed any such behavior, please immediately notify a IALE–NA Officer or other conference official
- Notification can either be done in person, at the Registration Desk, or via email by clicking the button below to contact an IALE–NA Officer
- Anyone experiencing or witnessing behavior that constitutes an immediate or serious threat to public safety is advised to locate a house phone and call security or to contact the front desk of the meeting venue
