CANCELED: (F3) Parks by Bus
THURSDAY, APRIL 12, 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
(F4) Indiana Dunes State Park and National Lakeshore
Cost per person: $70; includes transportation, lunch/bottled water, state park entry fee, gratuities (Space is limited to 52 participants)
Hosted by: Emily Minor, accompanied by ecological researchers from the local USGS office.
The Indiana Dunes extend nearly 15 miles along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, just an hour away from downtown Chicago. Considered by some to be the ‘birth place of ecology’ because of Henry Cowles’ 1899 classic paper on plant succession, the Dunes are still among the most significant landscapes in America. We will take the bus and explore both the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the Indiana Dunes State Park. At the National Lakeshore, we will view a short movie about the Dunes, explore the visitor center, and take a hike with a National Park Ranger. We will have lunch at a local restaurant and then spend the afternoon at the State Park. Here we will enjoy some time at the nature center and then separate into groups for another (optional) hike according to interests and abilities. Among the hikes will be the 3-dune challenge (http://www.indianadunes.com/3dc/), which incorporates the three tallest dunes in the park. Other options will include easy (i.e., flat) and moderate trails. If nature cooperates, we should see spring wildflowers.
This is a full day field trip. Tour departs rain or shine, please plan attire accordingly.
