2022 Distinguished Service Award
Kristin Byrd, Ph.D.
Kristin Byrd, Research Physical Scientist with the USGS at the Western Geographic Science Centre, has been awarded the 2022 Distinguished Service Award by the North American Regional Association of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE-NA) at their annual meeting, which was held virtually in April 2022. The award for Distinguished Service recognizes individuals who have contributed exceptionally to IALE-NA. Exceptional service represents a contribution to IALE-NA in terms of time, energy and dedication that advanced the mission of IALE-NA in an extraordinary manner and thus deserves special recognition.
Kristin is the founding chair of the IALE-NA Equity, Inclusion and Diversity (EID) committee. This committee has developed an EID statement and a comprehensive and thoughtful strategic plan, many aspects of which (mentoring program, scholarships) have already been implemented, despite the plan only being developed in 2021. One of her nominators noted that “(a)lthough the Strategic Plan is advertised as being developed by the entire committee, Kristin was the driving force behind this document”. Dr. Byrd currently also serves on the Executive of IALE-NA as a councillor-at-large. In addition to service to IALE-NA, Kristin has contributed service as a member of the Science Advisory Team for the San Francisco Bay Wetland Regional Monitoring Program in 2018-2019 and as a team member for various NASA Working Groups and Program Teams.
Kristin earned a PhD at University of California, Berkeley, an M.A. at San Francisco State University, and a B.S. at Cornell University.
